ABFS HISTORY
The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda employed Mr. Michael Murrell, MCSFS, MSc. DNA Profiling, BSc. (Hons) Forensic Science as a Forensic Investigator/Consultant to establish a purpose-built state-of-the-art forensic science laboratory in Antigua and Barbuda to provide forensic services to all law enforcement agencies in their fight against crime and in the detection of crime in Antigua and Barbuda.
The “Antigua & Barbuda Forensic Services (ABFS)” was established as an Executive Agency by the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Public Safety and Labour and an administrative office opened at the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force Training Facility at Coolidge, St. George.
ABFS PROPOSED DEPARTMENTS AND SCIENTIFIC SERVICES
The Antigua & Barbuda Forensic Services (ABFS) intends to introduce several departments which would provide forensic science services and analysis in several disciplines to all law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in Antigua and Barbuda and overseas.
Some of the Departments and Scientific Services will be:-
- Forensic Biology Unit – Serology, Forensic DNA profiling and DNA database retention and paternity testing, etc.;
- Forensic Trace Evidence Unit–Examination and analysis of forensic evidence;
- Forensic Chemistry Unit–Forensic chemistry, analysis of controlled substances, toxicology, arson, and fire debris investigation;
- Forensic Firearm Investigation Unit – Ballistics, firearms, and tool marks investigations;
- Forensic Latent Print Unit – Fingerprint and palm print examination and photography;
- Specialized Forensic Support Unit–Major crime scenes support and examination, crime scene reconstruction;
- Forensic Questioned Document Unit – Document examination and analysis;
- Forensic Cybercrime Unit/ Digital Forensic Unit– Computer forensics, mobile forensic, and video forensics.
- Forensic Evidence Reception – Storage and preservation of Forensic evidence.
FUTURE GOALS
Over the next 1-4 years, the Antigua & Barbuda Forensic Services (ABFS) intends to construct the ABFS Forensic Laboratory and recruit additional professional staff to satisfy its needs as each forensic discipline come on stream during the development of the organization.
