he k-9 unit has been in existence for around two decades.  In 2010 the unit was strengthened with 3 dogs with new handlers who was trained with said dogs. The k-9 unit was later reformed in 2017 with the inclusion of 8 dogs from the United Kingdom with new handlers.

The dogs were trained in various disciplines to include; Obedience, Protection, Apprehension, Narcotics detection Firearm and Ammunition Detecting, FX Bomb Detecting and tracking of humans.

The primary purpose of the unit is to give support. As a supporting unit we give assistance to all departments within the organization and other law enforcement Agencies. We work along daily with assisting these departments, weather on Search Warrants, Tracking of humans and Crowd Control, apprehension etc.

The scanning of persons’ luggage and cargo at high risk areas, mainly the ports of entry to include sea port, airport and post office are also done daily. The searching of vessels (cruise, cargo, commercial, private ship and yachts) along with commercial, cargo and private aircrafts are also done upon request or information.

We are also very active in Community Policing and incorporate different methods and practices to engage the public. On various occasions we lectured at Primary and Secondary Schools and have real life scenarios using theory and practical demonstrations. We participate in the annual dog show in Falmouth Harbour with persons from the community where we display the dogs ‘skills.

We all have love and passion for dogs and the role they play in performing our duties and personal life. The more you set out to understand and appreciate the dogs, the different dog breeds and the various services they can provide the finding will truly amaze you.

I think it’s helpful for children and adults to understand the significance of dogs and how these dogs (man’s best friend) can become a motivational guide throughout our careers and lives as a whole.
