Background

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda (RPFAB) is a community service-oriented organization. Therefore, it is paramount that that we maintain an open and professional working relationship with the media and the public we serve. In today’s electronic and internet age the media plays a significant role in creating ideologies, developing mind set and shaping the culture of all who falls under its influence.

In light of the aforementioned, in June 2007 The Office of Strategic Communications (STRATCOM) was established to serve this very purpose. It is virtually impossible for the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda to build a good reputation and or gain public trust and confidence without establishing an open and high-quality relationship with the

media and the general public. If the public is to have confidence in the actions we take, there must be certain level of openness and transparency on our part in providing them with the necessary information surrounding our actions.

OBJECTIVES of STRATCOM

Separate and apart from creating and maintaining an open and professional working relationship with the media, the Office of Strategic Communications-Stratcom, has also set out to the following:

  1. Establish our accountability to the public we serve.
  2. Keep the public accurately informed of crime and newsworthy occurrences in a timely manner.
  3. Create an environment whereby Police activities are subjected to open scrutiny by the media and the public we serve.
  4. Maintain media involvement in crime prevention and community policing programs.
  5. Promote and highlight public services performed by members of the Police Force.
  6. Keep the public informed on issues of public safety.
  7. Update the public of major achievements and areas of expertise acquired by members of the RPFAB.
  8. Encourage the public to become our partners in our crime-fighting efforts.

Information released to the media shall be handled in an impartial and fair manner. This ensures that the public will develop more confidence in the Police Force so that they are able to openly scrutinize our activities and be kept updated on matters of interest to
